Munich – Borussia Dortmund is eliminated in the last sixteen of the Champions League. This also has financial consequences; in the top division there is more money to be made than ever before.

After the black evening in Paris, the disillusionment in Dortmund is great.

After a good starting position from the first leg, BVB lost against Paris Saint-Germain in the eighth-finals of the Champions League. Besides the sporting disappointment, this also has financial consequences.

Champions League: More than 15 million euros in entry fees
1.95 billion (!) is being paid out by UEFA this season in the top division. Never before has there been so much for the teams. 25 percent of the pool goes into entry fees, 30 percent into performance-related fixed amounts.

Another 30 percent of the money will be distributed “on the basis of the performance-based coefficient ranking from the past ten years,” UEFA writes on its homepage. The remaining 15 percent will be allocated to variable amounts, the so-called market pool.

The starting bonus alone for each club amounts to 15.25 million euros, 20 percent more than in the years 2015 to 2018.

For every victory in the group stage, a team receives 2.7 million euros, and 900,000 euros for every draw. A further 9.5 million will be added when a club reaches the last sixteen.

BVB millions go through the slips
If the team reaches the quarter-finals, which BVB has now failed to do, 10.5 million euros will be added; if it reaches the semi-finals, there will be 12 million euros.

The finalists will receive a further prize of 15 million euros, the title will be rewarded with an additional four million euros. The winner also qualifies for the Super Cup, which guarantees an additional 3.5 million euros.

Champion FC Liverpool thus collected around 70 million euros in bonuses last season and collected a total of 111 million euros. This season, the winner will be rewarded with even more money.

In 2014, when Real Madrid took the pot to the Spanish capital, the royals collected 57.4 million euros. This amount has already doubled six years later.
