A goalkeeper icon could soon be at the head of the Spanish Football Association. Iker Casillas is running for the top post of the RFEF.

Goalkeeper icon Iker Casillas is running for president of the Spanish Football Federation RFEF.

“Yes, I will run”, the 38-year-old announced on Monday via Twitter, confirming media reports of the past few days.

The former world and European champion had been toying with the idea of looking for another field of activity for some time after his heart attack last year.

Casillas has to compete against Luis Rubiales, who has been RFEF president since 2018 and is standing for re-election. After the suspension of long-time association boss Angel Maria Villar on charges of corruption, Rubiales won a run-off vote against interim president Juan Luis Larrea.

The election is to be held in May or June.
