Oliver Mintzlaff hopes that infringements of financial fair play will be punished more severely in future. His club RB Leipzig would have to save money for another reason.

Oliver Mintzlaff has called for stricter penalties in the fight for financial fair play in the wake of the overturned suspension for Manchester City from UEFA competitions.

“As you know, we are absolute supporters of financial fair play and compliance with it. I cannot speak for Manchester City and would like to wait for the exact reasons for the verdict,” Leipzig’s managing director told Bild. “But a new way of thinking about stricter penalties and increased monitoring certainly makes sense. It needs rules that are observed by everyone and leave no back doors open.”

RB Leipzig has to save because of Corona
UEFA had actually banned ManCity from the Champions League for two years, but the international sports court CAS lifted the ban a few days ago. The fine against the “Citizens” was also reduced from 30 to 10 million euros.

Mintzlaff made it clear that Leipzig has no problems with financial fair play, but that it must still save money because of the Corona effects.

“Of course, we have invested in various areas of our club in recent years, but we have always focused on sustainability and brought in young, highly talented players who could develop with us. As a result of the Corona crisis, we are now between 21 and 28 million euros short. The money isn’t there, and we have to save it.
