Emre Can is finding his way around Borussia Dortmund with increasing ease. Against Hertha BSC, the German national player is not only convincing as head of defence and scorer.

Emre Can still had a lot of work waiting for him after the final whistle.

The 1-0 win over Hertha BSC on Saturday evening was long since over, the team mates already in the dressing room, when the midfielder started a real TV marathon. Before that, Can had swapped jerseys with former Liverpool colleague and Hertha player Marko Grujic. Then he quickly put on a yellow jacket and tinkled from microphone to microphone to give his much sought-after assessment of the 19th victory of the season.

His team managed not to concede a goal, praised Can, who certainly played a large part in this important success. “And at the front I was lucky to have scored,” he said modestly. “I’m glad it worked out like that.”

With his skilful swerve into the right-hand corner of the goal in the 58th minute, the 25-time international decided the game in favour of the black-yellow and ensured that his colours also made a big step towards the runners-up spot. BVB took advantage of the mistakes of their direct rivals Leipzig (1-1 against Paderborn), Gladbach (0-1 in Freiburg) and Leverkusen (2-4 against Bavaria).

“We played very well on defense, which is also due to Emre,” praised coach Lucien Favre. “He also scored a goal.”
