Munich – Several Bundesliga pros send a message about the death of George Floyd through police violence. However, the DFB is threatening a penalty. Rainer Koch explains the reason.

Weston McKennie, Jadon Sancho, Achraf Hakimi and Marcus Thuram: They all received a lot of praise for their expressions of solidarity with George Floyd, who was killed by police violence in the USA at the weekend.

At least the first three, however, could now be threatened with misfortune: While Gladbach’s Thuram decided to use a silent message after his 2-0 goal against Union Berlin when he fell to his knees, the mischief-maker and the two BVB pros wore their message against racism clearly visible on their equipment – which is actually forbidden.

“The Control Committee of the DFB will look into this matter over the next few days and examine the facts,” announced the Chairman of the Control Committee, Anton Nachreiner, on Sunday at the request of the German Press Agency.

Koch strives to smooth waves
On Monday afternoon, DFB Vice President Rainer Koch endeavoured to smooth the waters and referred to dfb.de, pointing out the basic task of the Control Committee, “to monitor compliance with the DFB’s statutes and regulations and to review the facts in the event of violations.

These checks are also intended to determine “whether the game and the pitch are the right place for these actions. Koch went on to explain: “It remains to be seen whether sanctions are necessary in the cases at hand.”
