The Spanish La Liga is planning to resume play soon. Already in June, the ball is expected to roll again in the empty stadiums.

In Spanish top soccer, the ball is expected to roll again in June despite the corona crisis.

As the national league association announced on Monday, both the first and second leagues will resume play in empty stadiums next month. “The current circumstances are new, but we hope to start again in June and finish our 2019/20 season this summer,” league president Javier Tebas said in a press release.

This week LaLiga will take the first step back to normality. Starting on Tuesday, all teams will undergo coronate tests, and all players who have tested negative will be allowed to resume training in small groups at the club facilities this week.

La Liga resumption plan to last one month
The country’s health and sports authorities had given the green light for this on Monday. LaLiga, the Spanish Federation (RFEF) and medical experts had previously drawn up a joint return protocol, “with the aim of ensuring the greatest possible safety for all persons,” according to the Federation’s announcement.

The corresponding resumption plan is expected to take about a month before the intermediate step of team training will be used to end the season with ghost games. Spain is one of the countries hardest hit by the corona crisis, with games already suspended since 12 March.

According to LaLiga figures, professional football accounts for 1.37 percent of Spain’s gross domestic product and provides 185,000 jobs in the country. “The return of soccer means that society is gradually returning to normal,” Tebas said, therefore.
