Lionel Messi scores a free kick in Barcelona’s match against Valencia FC and approaches Diego Maradona’s record.

With a double pack and a magic free kick, Lionel Messi led FC Barcelona to victory over Valencia on Sunday, keeping his team in the title race.

It was ready to be 56th goal by free kick – counting all hits in the club as well as for Argentina together. That’s only three less than Diego Maradona’s Argentine record of 59 free kicks in his career.

Messi has already beaten Manuel Pelegrina’s 45 hits and Daniel Passarella’s 43 when it comes to the number of free kicks his compatriots have made.

His goals in the 3-2 (0-0)away victory against Valencia FC were number 27 and 28 goals of the season.
