Guardiola ridicules football

Coach Pep Guardiola boasts a lot of money from Manchester City. Looking at Financial Fair Play, SPORT1 Head of Newsroom Maximilian Miguletz writes.

Money scores goals, Pep Guardiola was so honest after Manchester City’s 2-0 with Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Champions League. (The game to read in the ticker)

“We have a lot of money to buy a lot of incredible players.” This is how the coach justified the success of his team.

What seemed astonishingly honest was perhaps meant as a tip against all those critics who see the success of the Skyblues solely due to the transfer excesses. So much driest sarcasm is imputed to the Spaniard.

However, it was much more unconscious, namely also a painful reminder of everything that has become out of balance in modern football – and why Guardiolas ManCity should not actually participate in the top class.

Manchester City barely missed European Cup ban

For example, the European Football Union’s (UEFA) monitoring body judged fairly accurately a year ago: for violating the Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules, it imposed a two-year European Cup ban on the Sheikh Club and a hefty fine.

A decision that was collected in the summer by the International Court of Sports CAS: no ban, lower fine – to the delight of Guardiola, who at that time spoke of a “good day for football”.
