The 58-year-old placed an oversized 20×50 metre election poster in the Spanish capital Madrid – less than 200 metres away from the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, home of the permanent contractor Real Madrid.
With a broad grin and the motto: “We look forward to seeing you again,” Laporta smiles at the Madridista from a house wall in the future.
Former Barca President Josep Maria Bartomeu resigned on 27 October after a power struggle with superstar Lionel Messi with the entire leadership team. Laporta is one of seven candidates in the presidential elections on January 24, 2021 and is considered a favourite for Bartomeu’s successor alongside businessman Victor Font.
According to the association’s announcement, candidates can collect the signatures required for the candidacy between 23 December and 11 January. The official election campaign will take place from 15 to 22 January. Laporta, lawyer and politician, had already led the Catalans as president from 2003 to 2010.
