The Haaland shock and the consequences

Erling Haaland will not be available to BVB until the end of the year, thereby missing out on important games. Can Dortmund compensate for the loss of his striker?

The almost unthinkable has occurred.

About an hour before the BVB’s Champions League game against Lazio Rome (1:1) kicked off, Borussia Dortmund reported the job message: Erling Haaland suffered a muscle fiber rupture and is losing out for longer.

“He injured himself in practice yesterday, he won’t play until early January,” coach Lucien Favre confirmed the fears before the game. In the game, defence boss Mats Hummels also injured himself and had to leave the pitch prematurely. However, the 2014 World Champion already gave a slight warning via Instagram, possibly already on the weekend against Eintracht Frankfurt ready for action.

Haaland misses at least six games!

This definitely does not apply to Haaland. The Norwegian is likely to miss at least six competitive matches, so often the BVB has to compete in this calendar year. Games that are of great importance for the rest of the season. In addition to the second round match in the DFB Cup against Eintracht Braunschweig on 22 December, four Bundesliga games and a top-class game await the Dortmund team.

Next Tuesday, Zenit Sankt-Petersburg is about the important group victory, which would give the Dortmundern a supposedly lighter opponent in the quarter-finals. And in the Bundesliga, the deficit on FC Bayern Munich has already grown to four points after the embarrassing 1-2 against FC Cologne last weekend. The Favre elf can hardly afford a greater distance if they want to take part in the back lap with a serious word for the title.
