The CAS ruling on Manchester City is causing debate. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge criticises UEFA and demands reforms in financial fair play.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has congratulated his “friend” Pep Guardiola on the lifting of the European Cup ban on Manchester City.

However, the chairman of the board of FC Bayern accused the UEFA committee responsible for the Champions League of “not doing a good job”. “It wasn’t well prepared,” Rummenigge said at a press conference on Monday.

The decision by the International Court of Justice for Sport (CAS) to lift the two-year ban on the European Cup for citizens for breaches of financial fair play had caused criticism. After all, the actual control mechanism of UEFA had been damaged by this.

Rummenigge demands reforms in Financial Fair Play

“We must find other tools, and I am sure that this is possible,” Rummenigge demanded. In the future, he said, financial fair play would have to be “much more focused” and “modified” because behaviour has changed dramatically over the past ten years.

Rummenigge was optimistic that Financial Fair Play would lead to “more reasonable figures in football” if handled slightly differently. “This is what our fans want, we have to listen to them,” said the 64-year-old. We need to return more to the principle that you shouldn’t spend more than you earn, he added.

With regard to a salary cap, Rummenigge said that the problem in Germany is that the laws do not allow “a cap on salaries”. Therefore, it is important to find a regulation “that is accepted by all players, clubs and agents”.
