Corona: Club must not move up

At Spain’s second division team Fuenlabrada, the coronavirus is spreading faster and faster. The league is therefore pulling the ripcord – and robbing the club of its opportunity for promotion.

That is bitter – and the dream of a possible promotion is over: At Spanish second division club CF Fuenlabrada, the corona virus is spreading more and more.

According to the club, twelve more team members tested positive in another round of testing.

In total, 28 people within the team have already been infected. The entire team has been stuck in a hotel in La Coruna for over a week, and no one is to leave their hotel room.

Apparently under questionable circumstances. “Until the sixth day of the quarantine they did not receive a fresh towel or gel,” wrote the sports newspaper AS.

Quarantine under questionable conditions?

The accusation of having deliberately endangered public health had previously been rejected by the club’s lawyer, Javier Tebas Llanas.

According to the Europa Press and Marca news agency, the son of La Liga president Javier Tebas Llanas emphasised that the Corona rules laid down by the association had not been violated.

But that is not all: Fuenlabrada, from the city of the same name southwest of Madrid, has so far had a chance to reach the promotion play-offs, was already in the region of Galicia for the last game of the season before the first corona falls were discovered – and the game now had to be cancelled.

Serious consequence: The Spanish national association announced on Sunday that the match would not be made up due to force majeure. FC Elche will therefore take part in the play-offs, it was said – while Fuenlabrada is looking in the tube and now even threatened relegation to the B group of the Second League.
