FC Brügge fails in its bid to attract Cologne’s best attacker. The FC wants to keep Jhon Córdoba – but it is not certain where they will stay.

He is Cologne’s best. In the past season, Jhon Córdoba scored 13 goals (two assists) in 29 Bundesliga games for 1st FC Cologne and has long since made it onto the list of numerous clubs.

The 27-year-old striker’s contract expires in summer 2021. It is doubtful whether the Colombian will still be able to play for the billy goats in the new season.

According to information, FC Brugge were very interested in signing the Colombian. The Belgian champions lured Córdoba with the prospect of playing in the Champions League next season, but they were reluctant.

Brugge boss Vincent Mannaert said: “Córdoba is a very good player who has established himself in the Bundesliga. It’s right that we’ve looked into him. But unfortunately the financial gap is too big for us.

The FC around sports director Horst Heldt actually wants to keep his top striker and has already made him an offer with improved pay for early contract extension. But the Colombian international, who is currently keeping fit in Barcelona, is still waiting.

Heldt: “We are interested in an extension and have made an offer. He will think about it and then approach us.”

Heldt makes it clear: “There is no Corona bonus”
Although Córdoba does not have an exit clause, the Cologne-based company, which paid 17 million euros to Mainz three years ago, wants to see a good deal of money in a possible sale. “There will be no Corona bonus for him,” Heldt clarifies. “Jhon has scored 13 goals in the Bundesliga. If we want to get a player of his stature this summer, we certainly can’t pay him. He has his quality and that costs. We know what we have on him.
