Diego Simeone’s assistant German Burgos leaves Atlético Madrid After nine years of partnership, the 51-year-old wants to accept a position as head coach.
The coaches Diego Simeone and German Burgos are going separate ways after nine successful years. He wants to take on a job as head coach, said the Argentinean Burgos, who had been working as assistant to his compatriot Simeone at Spanish first division football club Atlético Madrid since 2011.
Spanish media brought the 51-year-old Burgos into contact with Argentina’s traditional club River Plate from Buenos Aires. Burgos had assisted Simeone in Italy with Catania Calcio and in Argentina with Racing Club of Avellaneda.
The duo have been working for Atlético since 2011, with joint successes including winning the Spanish championship in 2013/14, triumphs in the Europa League in 2011/12 and 2017/18 and reaching the Champions League finals in 2013/14 and 2015/16.
