The English Premier League clubs could have to pay back almost 400 million euros to their TV partners – despite the resumption of the season.

The Premier League clubs could have to tighten their belts considerably in future.

As the BBC reports, the teams could have to pay back a whopping £340 million (388 million euros) to national and international TV partners – even if the season continues.

Since the season will not continue as planned – the matches will take place without fans and on dates other than those set – the reimbursement by the TV stations has been requested. If the season is shortened or relegation is cancelled, the amount could increase even further.

Premier League boss fears £1 billion loss
League chairman Richard Masters had previously predicted a loss of “at least a billion pounds” if the season could not be completed.

“We were able to keep our clubs informed today about our situation with the broadcasters, which is of course confidential,” Masters said on Monday after a meeting with club officials. “Whatever happens, there will be a significant loss of revenue for the clubs. It’s inevitable.”

The teams would have been informed “what would happen in various scenarios, if the season ends and if it doesn’t, so that the clubs can get an idea.”

There was also a lot of discussion about how the remaining games would be played. According to unanimous media reports, there is strong opposition to the plan to hold the season at neutral venues. Above all, the clubs at risk of relegation should insist on playing their home games in the respective home stadiums.

“Everyone would prefer to play at home and away if possible. You can see that some clubs take this more seriously than others,” Masters explained.
