The Champions League match between Liverpool FC and Atlético Madrid is being investigated. That match could be linked to the Corona spread.
It was supposed to be one of those infamous nights at Anfield – but it turned out differently.
In the second leg of the Champions League round of sixteen between Liverpool FC and Atlético Madrid, the Spaniards forced the defending champions to their knees with a 3-2 draw. It was the last game in England before the entire match was suspended due to the Corona crisis.
As the game was also attended by 52,000 spectators (3,000 fans from Madrid), the match is now being investigated.
Champions League game responsible for Corona distribution?
The investigation is intended to find out what effect the game may have had on the spread of the corona virus.
Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, had already criticised the match with spectators and called for an independent investigation into whether the match should have taken place. A government spokesman now confirmed the plan: “Liverpool City Council, together with partners at the University of Liverpool and John Moores University, have agreed to investigate the effects of Covid-19 as a result of the Atlético Madrid game at Anfield on 11 March.
The City Council’s health team is currently assessing the size and scope of the project with partners. However, as the city is currently focusing on fighting the virus, no timetable or date has yet been set for the completion of the work.
