Munich’s Allianz Arena will remain the venue for the European Football Championship, which has been postponed until summer 2021. This decision was made by the city council.
Fans of the German national soccer team can look forward to home games of the European Championship in Munich in 2021.
On Wednesday, Munich’s city council approved a draft resolution by the city’s sports department to continue to play a total of four matches in the Allianz Arena even after the EURO has been postponed by twelve months.
At the tournament (11 June to 11 July 2021), the DFB team will play its group matches against world champions France, defending champions Portugal and a play-off winner in the Bavarian capital. A quarter-final will also be played in Munich. All tickets remain valid. However, fans who wish to return their tickets can do so.
Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) welcomed the decision. “The European Championship brings many positive impulses for our city and the city society. Especially now we need the prospect of such events”, he said.
Koch: “Certainly not an easy decision”
“This was certainly not an easy decision,” said DFB Vice President Rainer Koch, “so it was important and right to take the time it took to arrive at a well-founded vote. The Bavarian Football Association, which Koch presides over, is “very grateful to Munich that it will also be present at EURO 2021,” he said. Munich is a cosmopolitan city and has repeatedly proven itself to be the perfect host.”It is by no means certain that the EURO 2021 will also take place in the same twelve cities as planned for this year. “All the cities have to confirm that they want to continue playing. Otherwise, something would have to be changed,” said Germany’s ambassador to the European Championship Philipp Lahm recently: “The stadium operators must also continue to be involved. That is the case in Munich. The European Football Union (UEFA) had announced that it wanted to retain London as the final venue in all twelve cities around the final venue. The semi-finals of the tournament, which was postponed due to the Corona crisis, are also planned in the British metropolis. Despite the postponement, which, according to President Aleksander Ceferin, will cost UEFA “hundreds of millions of euros”, the final round will also be known as “EURO 2020” in 2021.
