Spanish Health Minister Salvador Illa expresses doubts about an early continuation of the La Liga season. He is sceptical about a possible special treatment.

Spanish Health Minister Salvador Illa doubts that the season in the Primera Division will continue in the next few months.

“I cannot yet say whether professional football can be resumed before the summer. That would be inconsiderate of me,” Illa said on Sunday at his daily press conference on the corona crisis. It would be “unwise” to promise this.

With over 23,000 deaths, Spain is one of the countries most affected by the coronavirus. Play has been suspended since 12 March. League boss Javier Tebas is determined to finish the championship in order to save the TV revenues that are vital for survival.

The league plans to test all players for the coronavirus before returning to training and then regularly afterwards. However, Illa was reluctant to take any action in view of the possible special treatment of football professionals.

“The diagnostic tests, regardless of their nature, must be made available to regional authorities,” he said.
