Carlo Ancelotti reveals that Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp did not agree to host the Champions League match against Atlético Madrid during the Corona crisis.
Despite the corona pandemic already spreading around the world, the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 between Liverpool and Atlético Madrid was played in front of a full house at Anfield Road on 11 March 2020.
Defending champions Liverpool were eliminated 3-2 in the round of the last 16. Coach Juergen Klopp was apparently not happy about the match, as Everton coach Carlo Ancelotti revealed.
Klopp: “Criminal act”
“I spoke to Klopp on the phone a few days ago. He told me that the decision to play the game was a criminal act,” Ancelotti told Corriere dello Sport. “And I think he’s right.”
The warning signs had been present for some time at that point, but the necessary action was only taken after Mikel Arteta of Arsenal and Callum Hudson-Odoi of Chelsea tested positive in the following days.
The Premier League has been on hiatus ever since, with play resuming on 30 April at the earliest.
