Atlético Madrid moves forward, becoming the first club in Spain to give up part of their salary. Things had been different at FC Barcelona.

The wave of professional athletes giving up part of their salary has now reached the Spanish premier league.

In the case of Champions League quarter-finalists Atlético Madrid, both the players and the coaching team will waive parts of their salaries in the coming weeks due to the corona crisis. This was confirmed by President Enrique Cerezo at Radio Marca.

“We have approached the players and the coaching team with this,” said the 72-year-old: “They are aware of what is happening around them. Therefore, there will be no problems on their part.” But Cerezo didn’t say anything about the amount of the losses.

Barca stars refuse salary cuts

Atlético is the first club from La Liga to decide to take such an action.
In doing so, the Rojiblancos are following numerous international examples from the world of professional sport, including the fact that many Bundesliga clubs are forgoing part of their salaries.

Previously, according to media reports, the players of Spanish champions FC Barcelona had already rejected an initial proposal by the club to cut salaries.

The players around world footballer Lionel Messi and national goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen are generally willing to cut salaries in the Corona crisis, but they have rejected the scale proposed by the board of directors, according to the sports paper Marca.Atlético Madrid moves forward, becoming the first club in Spain to give up part of their salary.
