Pride comes before a fall: Cesc Fàbregas reports on a curious penalty bet with Willy Caballero – and how he pulled himself out of the affair with great elegance.

Betting debts are debts of honour.

Cesc Fàbregas was forced to admit this after he spoke a little too much in a duel with goalkeeper Willy Caballero.

The former world and European champion told on his social media channels about the curious bet he made during his time at Chelsea FC. Short spoiler up front: In the end, he still had the laughs on his side.

“Many times, for years, I stayed after practice to shoot a few penalties,” wrote the 32-year-old, who is now under contract with AS Monaco.

He has always made small bets with the goalkeepers to add a little “spice” to the duel. “For some reason, I never missed one. So one day I got too cocky, and it got out of hand.”

Fàbregas: “Like the dumbest guy on earth”
On that day, he had just faced the aforementioned Caballero (still with Chelsea) during his training ritual.

“I told him if you get him out, I’ll give you a Range Rover. Unfortunately for me, he held it in front of the whole team.”

You can imagine how the confidence left him suddenly and he felt “like the dumbest guy on Earth” instead.

To the cheers and laughter of his teammates, it was made clear to him that he had to stick to his bet. But Fàbregas had a plan.

“I went to a junkyard and bought a wrecked Range Rover that was totally unfit for use.” The good bit was for sale for £950 (about 1046 euros). The Spaniard didn’t think long: “You know what? I’ll take that!”

Lost the bet – and still a winner
And further: “The next day they took it (the wreck) to the training area and, well, … I will show you the rest in a video.”

In the video you can see this: Under the resounding laughter of the assembled team mates, Fàbregas presented the completely useless off-road vehicle, which he had even given a big golden ribbon. All recorded on the smartphones of the superstars.Pride comes before a fall: Cesc Fàbregas reports on a curious penalty bet with Willy Caballero – and how he pulled himself out of the affair with great elegance.
