FC Liverpool and Jürgen Klopp set a new Premier League record. Never before has a team won more games in a row.

Jürgen Klopp of English Premier League leaders Liverpool FC “never thought it possible” that his team could have broken Manchester City’s record of 18 consecutive wins.

On Monday, the Champions League winner had equalized ManCity’s record by beating West Ham United 3-2 after a 2-1 deficit. The Citizens had won 18 times in a row between August and December 2017.

“It’s something very special,” Klopp said, “the number of wins is incredible and so difficult to achieve. I’ve always said we want to write our own stories, create our own history.” Senegalese player Sadio Mane (81st) had scored the winning goal against relegation contender West Ham.

Liverpool last lose to Manchester City in January 2019
Most recently, on 20 October, Liverpool lost league points to arch-rivals Manchester United (1-1). The last defeat is dated 3 January 2019 (2-1 at Manchester City). The first league title since 1990 is very close for the Reds, who have a staggering 22-point lead over ManCity at the top of the standings. A maximum of four wins from eleven matches is still to come.

“The boys have taken it all very seriously. It’s cool, but it’s not really important at the moment,” emphasised the ex-Maint- and Dortmund coach. Klopp continued: “It couldn’t have looked better before the last eleven games.”

Mané turns the match against West Ham
Against the Hammers the leader had to break great resistance. The Londoners immediately countered the 1-0 defeat by Georginio Wijnaldum (9.) with Issa Diop (12.). Pablo Fornals (55.) even put West Ham in the lead, but the Champions League winner struck back: Mohamed Salah (68.) and Mane turned the match around again.
