In Spain, the match between SD Eibar and Real Sociedad San Sebastian must be cancelled. The reason is a fire at a nearby landfill site.

Curious rescheduling in the Spanish premier league: The match between SD Eibar and Real Sociedad from San Sebastian, scheduled for Sunday, has been postponed due to a fire at a nearby landfill.

This was announced by the Spanish Football Federation RFEF on Saturday afternoon. The clubs now have until Tuesday to agree on a catch-up date.

The air pollution caused by the fire is hazardous to health and therefore prevents the regular game of the 24th matchday, the association explained.

Zaldibar’s landfill, the largest in the Basque Country, which is only 16 kilometres from the Eibar stadium, collapsed on 6 February. Two workers were trapped by the rubble and a fire was started that could not be completely extinguished even nine days later.

The Basque Ministry of Health had therefore issued an official warning on Friday. Residents of surrounding areas should keep their windows closed if possible. In addition, outdoor sports should be avoided if possible.
