Munich – In the evening, the Champions League round of sixteen will see a big duel between Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain. For Raphael Guerreiro it is a special game.

Raphael Guerreiro is currently on everyone’s lips.

Dortmund’s Portuguese is currently trumping with a permanently strong constitution and shone most recently in the game against Frankfurt, when BVB overtook Eintracht 4-0. Guerreiro excelled with a pass rate of 96.3 percent, the most deals as well as shots and of course his remarkable goal for the 4-0.

Under Lucien Favre, the 2016 European champion is currently seeded. His flexibility, both on defence as a left-back and on offense as a left midfielder, fits perfectly into Favre’s preferred 3-5-2 system. When he is fit, the 26-year-old is currently an integral part of the Dortmund starting line-up. This has not always been the case.

Guerreiro in summer 2019 shortly before Paris change

Only last summer there had been fierce rumours about a change of guerrilla groups. The biggest taker at the time? Dortmund’s upcoming Champions League opponent Paris Saint-Germain.

Especially his coach, ex-BVB coach Thomas Tuchel, is considered a big guerrilla fan. After Dortmund had signed three players this summer, Julian Brandt, Thorgan Hazard, and Nico Schulz, all of whom can play in Guerreiro’s position(s), it looked like the versatile Portuguese was expendable. For Canal+’s France expert Raphael Domenach, it was completely incomprehensible.

“Guerreiro is a great player and a great guy, very likeable. In Dortmund he now plays a little more offensively than before”, he judges in an interview with SPORT1. “In France (at SM Caen and FC Lorient, editor’s note) he was left-back at that time and for that reason alone he was almost seeded, because there aren’t that many good players on the position. He has a fantastic left foot, but what I really appreciate about him is his attitude: he’s a real team player.
