Borussia Dortmund has failed in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup. Coach Lucien Favre’s team lost 2:3 (0:2), while the Hanseatic team showed their best performance of the season by far.

Davie Selke put the top team in the lead with a poacher’s goal in the 16th minute, while Marvin Hitz in the Dortmund goal repulsed a shot from Milot Rashica before. Leonardo Bittencourt (30.) was responsible for the 2-0 win with an unstoppable long-range shot into the corner.

The Norwegian goalkeeper Erling Haaland scored in the 67th minute, but only 180 seconds later Rashica restored the old distance with a low shot. Giovanni Reyna scored again for Dortmund in the 78th minute.

Favre had left Haaland on the bench for the time being despite seven goals in the last three games, and even Blitztransfer Emre Can was not in the starting line-up for the visitors, he was substituted in the final phase. And Haaland was missing from the BVB offensive: Up to the Bremen penalty area, the league third combined quite well, but the Dortmunders did not get any further. The North Germans were too well staggered, especially in the first half.

It was no coincidence that Werder goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka was only seriously tested by Mats Hummels (24th) in the first 45 minutes, when he fell backwards. In the 44th minute Selke missed the preliminary decision when he failed in a direct duel from close range due to heat.
