23 games, 22 wins, one draw: Liverpool FC can only beat themselves in the battle for the Premier League title. Wolverhampton did manage to score against the Reds.
The Wolverhampton Wanderers could have been the first team to beat Liverpool FC in the current Premier League season. A strong second half kept them 1-1 for a long time, the Wolves had good chances to take the lead – and then the leaders struck again: in the 84th minute it was Roberto Firmino who scored to give Liverpool a 2-1 (1-0) victory.
It was the Reds’ 22nd win of the 23rd match of the season, only Manchester United had managed to wrest a draw from Liverpool on Matchday 9. Coach Jürgen Klopp’s team is now leading the table with 67 points, while pursuers Manchester City have already lost 16 points and played one game more.
Liverpool have been under the strain of the season in recent weeks, and Wolverhampton were no exception. The Reds had a tough time after their narrow league wins over Everton (1-0) in the FA Cup and Tottenham (1-0) and Manchester United (2-0) in the league after Raúl Jiménez’s equaliser (51st minute). Goalkeeper Alisson Becker had to settle several times against Wolverhampton’s attacker. It was Becker’s first goal in seven consecutive Premier League games.
